When Luly was graphic designer, she entered a fashion show that requested the contestants to design and construct a dress out of paper. The original Monarch Butterfly Dress was eventually recreated with textiles including silk taffeta, black ostrich feathers, and Swarovski crystals.

Luly Yang Monarch dress. Get the dress and the occasion will present itself….Right?
No dress is perhaps as closely identified with Luly Yang as her famous Butterfly Dress. Before she started her couture business, Luly participated in a paper dress competition for which the goal was to artistically showcase the paper she was given. Luly decided to create a paper dress inspired by a Monarch butterfly! Later she constructed the actual dress using silk taffeta, Swarovski crystals and black ostrich feathers. Luly describes the dress as a metamorphosis that transformed her career path from graphic design to fashion design.
